A step back in history:

The tree peak of Lavaredo, certainly, the famous profile of the Dolomites, a nature’s impressive expression that all world us admire and envy, but also it’s a theatre of one most epic page but unfortunately ignored of our history.
During the coldest winters of the Century, a war was fought in the middle of the peaks of the Dolomites, a war which was unique in mankind's history. Austrian Kaiserjägers and German Alpenkorps on one side and the Alpini on the other. They confronted each other on high altitudes under extreme ambience and climatic conditions and with the unbelievable difficulty of delivering food and materials to the front line. From May 24th 1915 until November 1917, the front line was laid across the highest and most famous mountains of the Dolomites. The wind and the cold weather of the altitude, and avalanches, became the biggest enemy of the soldiers. It was more than just a battle between two troops, it became a war of human's versus the mountains. All the evidence that can still be seen nowadays proves the stubbornness and the courage of those who were sent off to fight on the faces of the rocks. Trenches, guards and tunnels are still spread across the front line. The slits on the mountain face indicate the shelters of the soldiers, in which they or the artillery guards lived and from where they started their continuous and useless attacks.
These soldiers were massacred to conquer an apparent simply heap of the stones, and moreover they were forced to advance on steep walls that often snowy, completely they were exposed to a enemy’s fire.
Nowadays, between the rocks, it’s possible to find the bones of the men fall down, and here the sensitive guest perceive both the beauty of visual sight and the tragic solemn sensation.
The war that was fought in this place was called “White War”, white so the snow that lodged it, the snow furrowed from very much shed blood, uselessly.

From two years, I’m working to photographic book on place, remains and memorial works about this fascinating tragic and also a little know history’s page.
Probably this picture will to be the cover.
